The goal of poker is to win the pot, which is the sum of all bets made during a hand. Each player must place chips into the pot in turn, either calling a bet or raising it. Once the betting interval is over, a showdown occurs in which each player displays his or her cards face up and the best poker hand wins the pot. There are many different variants of poker, but all involve betting in some way.
Before the start of a hand, each player must buy in for a certain amount of chips. There are usually five different colored chips, with each one worth a different number of chips. For example, a white chip is worth the minimum ante or bet; a red chip is worth five white chips; and a blue chip is worth twenty-five white chips. Players may bet any amount that they believe has positive expected value. A player who raises a bet must match it or fold.
During the flop phase of the game three community cards are dealt face up on the table. Each player must then decide whether to continue to the river phase of the game or fold his or her hand. A raised bet indicates that the player believes that his or her hand is stronger than the other players’ hands and that he or she is in a good position to win the pot.
During the turn phase of the game, another community card is revealed. Then, the fourth and final betting round takes place before the river is revealed. After the river, each player shows his or her cards to the other players. The highest-ranking poker hand wins the pot. If no one has a winning hand, then the pot is split among the tied players. If two players have the same hand, then the rank of the fifth card determines which hand wins. Similarly, if two hands contain identical pairs, then the highest pair wins.
